Sports

Introduction (2.2 MB)

The sports section is a nice break from news that can be included into U Report. Producers have the option of pre-taping sports or including it on-set. Keeping sports on-set allows the anchors to banter and have more interaction, but it also means more work the morning of taping. Pre-taping sports allows you to get one segment out of the way. One way of doing this would be in a different studio; for instance, if your shooting your show in Rarig, you could pre-tape sports in Murphy. Otherwise, an on location shoot is also possible, like being out at a ball field, etc. Shooting sports in a studio allows you to see if the reporter is reading to the highlights, which will make post-production a lot easier.

The other decision that needs to be made is what sports to cover: college vs. pros. The deciding factor with this tends to be access; whether you can get video or not. Since the show is set on the university, it's definitely a good idea to focus on what's going on with the Gophers, especially near tournament time. Throwing in some pro highlights gives the show a good mix, but is sometimes hard to get a hold of. If students in your class have internships at local TV stations, they most likely have access to pro games, interviews, etc. Don't be afraid to utilize them.
