Rarig Positions
Director
- Is in charge of calling the show from the control room. This means you are telling the board operator, a Studio B technician, what cameras to switch to during the show.
- “Ready Camera 2” means put Camera 2’s shot on the preview screen.
- “Take Camera 2” means cut to Camera 2’s shot.
- Other duties include making sure the whole production is going smoothly and keeping in touch with the Floor Director if something needs changing in the studio.
- Make sure the anchors and crew stays on schedule; you should have three shows taped by 12:00 p.m.
Video Engineer
- Is in charge of the running the computer that has the show’s video on it.
- You watch the Final Cut Timeline while the anchors are reading copy and make sure the video matches up with their reading.
- If the anchors read ahead, you can fast forward through the Timeline to get to the right spot.
- You also tell the control room how much time is left in packages, so they and the studio know how much time they have.
Third Producer
- Sits next to the director and is in charge of keeping each camera shot correct. This includes making sure the anchors are centered and the set looks good.
- Is the main person talking to the Floor Director about adjusting camera composition and anything else that needs changing, like script rewrites or anchor performance.
Floor Director
- Is the main line of communication between the control room and the studio.
- Conveys the producer’s directions to the people in the studio.
- Also conveys any problems the studio has back to the control room.
- During a taping, you will signal to the anchors which camera they need to be looking at.
Camera Operators
- Three people are responsible for each of the cameras in the studio.
- Main responsibility is to adjust the shot to the producer’s liking.
- It’s also important to “find focus.” This means, after each time the camera moves, zoom the camera all the way in, fix the focus until it is sharp, and zoom back out.
- Camera 1 and 3 are stationary, while Camera 2 has the teleprompter and can move around.
Anchors
- Main responsibility is to listen to what the producers want and follow through.
- Know the script and watch the Floor Director to know what camera to look at.
- Make all of the stories sound interesting and conversational; try to act natural in your banter.
Teleprompter
- In charge of running the teleprompter from a computer in the control room.
- Listen to the anchors’ reading speed and anticipate if they have to speed up or slow down during a certain part of the show.
Audio
- In charge of making sure the anchors microphones work and the levels are acceptable.
- Usually, a Studio B technician can run the audio board.
Floor Assistant
- You help the Floor Director with anything s/he needs, like rolling up cords for the camera or getting water for the anchors.
